Chapter Five
MARY AGNES ORPHANED
Ann thought about how long she and John have had the children since their mother passed away and was surprised that two and a half years have slipped away. Mary Agnes the youngest was seven and a half years old, just passed the age of reasoning. She then thought that Mary Agnes might be able to take the brunt of the bad news she had to tell her about a little bit better than expected.
Ann was adamant about trying different approaches to her problem before she jumps right into it without looking at possible alternatives.
Her first thought was that there might be families in the St Patrick’s community that would take in foster children. She decided to talk with the pastor of the church and get his opinion.
Ann carefully explained her problem to the pastor, Father Kelly who said he would look into the matter and try to find out if there were any families willing to take the Dohertys in. He didn’t offer a lot of hope though as he said three boys and one girl was a lot for one family to take in. He reminded Ann the economic time for Lowell was beginning to slow as a recession was beginning to cause concern for many of his parishioners.
Ann then asked father Kelley if he had any knowledge of what she should expect at St Peter’s orphanage. Father Kelley talked in glowing terms about the facility and its organization. He praised the Sisters of Charity and their work and efforts to insure that the children under their care received the best possible upbringing available to them. He offered to call the Superior Sister and make an appointment for Ann if she would like. Ann thought that would be nice and Father Kelly’s help would certainly open a door to the orphanage for her. Father Kelly did follow through for her and Ann had an appointment.
Ann met with Sister Superior and was quite surprised that the Sister had already been briefed by Father Kelly and was well aware of her problem. However, Sister told Ann that her capacity for boy enrollment had already been reached and she could not take on anymore.
Sister recommended the boys be sent to the Boy’s home in Boston.
Sister said she could take in Mary Agnes without any problem. Ann now realized the Doherty’s would be split and it would have to be that way until such time as John got better and they would all be reunited again. Sister said she would coordinate with Boston home for the boys and would assign Sister Mary Matthews as the home room master for Mary Agnes once Mary Agnes was admitted. Ann again thought all of this was only for a limited length of time until John got better. She told sister superior she would bring Mary Agnes into the orphanage the very next day along with all of her clothes and accessories.
Ann sat down with the boys and Mary Agnes to explain that
